The new ski season is approaching. I am looking forward to it with some trepidation! Last season I was competently hitting the slopes as a quite senior geezer skier of 91 for 70 outings. Not a bad year and equal to my nearly 30 year post- retirement average. Unfortunately, I seemed to have the challenges of aging imposing on my stability and agility. However, I remain optimistic that I will be able to manage to be competent once more. I have even had dreams of how it feels to engage the tips in a turn and holding a clean carve to the transition to the next turn.
However, I recognize that whatever happens I will be able to make the transition to a more sedentary approach to life. If you have followed my blog over the years or even perhaps reading it for the first time, you will notice that I was quite prolific in the early years by posting almost daily during the season. As the years have progressed I became less disciplined. Note that my most recent blog was in early September. Therefore, once I find myself more immobilized, I will need to find a way to continue to engage the geezer skier community as well as the skiing community beyond that and prepare musings on life after skiing. Also I shall post interviews with seniors still on the slopes. I can probably be found hanging out in the lodge at my local ski area to engage in interviews and coffee breaks. I will continue to look for fodder for my musings and welcome comments to my blog that any of you would want to share.
In the meantime, I am happy to have an extended family of skiers who have a multitude of adventures that they share with me. Recently a grandson posted a video of his extreme skiing competition run in Chile. It was a breathtaking exhibition of skiing skills sufficient to get to the podium of an international event. Whatever the circumstances for geezer skiers past their active days, there are ways to vicariously experience the joy of gliding down the slopes.
I look forward to commentary on life transitions of geezers retired from skiing.
